One of a Kind is the latest pop-up to open in Leeds, and it’s bringing together some of the region’s finest independent retailers to offer a host of unique items, just in time for Christmas.

It’s always exciting when a pop-up opens in Leeds, and this one is particularly special. It’s set to showcase local talent, as a team of independent retailers join forces to create a treasure trove of handmade pieces. From jewellery to vases, cards to decorations – you’ll be surprised how much they’ve managed to squeeze into their little Queens Arcade store.

Handmade CraftsOne of a Kind is the brain child of Team Leeds, a community of Etsy sellers based in our fair city. Rose Chambers, Team Leeds’ Captain and owner of Chamby & Cor, told us how it came about. “I set the team up in April this year and I’m absolutely thrilled that we now have over 200 member shops. In a short space of time, we’ve built up a really vibrant and collaborative community. It’s awesome to see the impact that that the team is having on our member shops.”

Earlier this year, they secured sponsorship from the famed online marketplace, giving them the money they needed to open up a pop-up shop – and thus, One of a Kind was born. Although only twenty six of their members will be showcasing their work at their new Queens Arcade store, you can expect a real mixed bag, with cufflinks from RSJS Studios, cards from Jessie & Squid by Caroline and finger puppets from Amy Panda by Amy Wilson.

The new pop-up Leeds store is likely to have a different feel to those around it, as it’s set to be manned by the very people who’ve created the beautiful pieces on sale. As Rose told us, “Team Leeds has a real community vibe and shoppers will be able to come into the shop, have a chat with the makers and even commission custom items in time for Christmas.” And that personal touch, the fact that you can order customised cards or engraved jewellery, will make the store stand out.

But it’s not just lovely products they’ll be peddling, they also have a lot of advice to give out to budding entrepreneurs – that is, after all, why Team Leeds came about in the first place, as Etsy sellers came together to share their experiences and successes. So if you think you might have a future in the craft business, nip in for a chat – they’ll be happy to share a little wisdom.

Starting up One of a Kind hasn’t exactly been easy – and their biggest challenge has been finding the right spot, as Rose told us. “Convincing landlords to offer such a short term lease in a prime location isn’t easy, which is a real shame. There are so many empty shops around Leeds at the moment and filling those spaces, even if only on a temporary basis, has huge benefits for our community and our local economy.”

But it all worked out in the end and they’re chuffed to bits with their Queens Arcade pop-up. Nestled as it is, just off the city’s busiest shopping street, it’s easy to find – so why not nip in and see what they have to offer?

One of a Kind will open in Queens Arcade on Saturday 15th November 2014.
